Port Location and Influence Area:
The port of Bayovar is operated by state company “Petroperu” Petroles del Peru. Bayovar is located in Sechura district - Piura department, on the North-West Coast at 1,000 Km from Lima city. The nearest city of Piura is located 120kms from Bayovar and connected by paved road.
Crude is pumped trough a pipeline from the amazon, the total section of pipeline is named "Oleducto Nor-Peruano", which has been described as one of more complex engineer project in the world. It has 856 kilometers length on it`s main section that born in the amazon and ascends through mountains up to 2,400 meters height, then descends across Sechura desert to finally arrive at the port of Bayovar, where crude is loaded on tanker ships for subsequent sea-transportation to Petroperu`s main refineries in the coast, such as Talara and Conchan.
Port / Harbour Description:
The Bayovar terminal is "T" shaped jetty which consists of a small installation with 200 meters length that extends from the coast and ends on transversal berthing front of about 150 meters length specially designed for tankers ships.
No breakwater as this is a natural sheltered harbour. Winds sometimes blows with 4-5 force coming from land. However there is a constant swell with moderate intensity which always affect vessels at berth.
Upon arrival, vessels usually drop anchor at pilot station, where pilot and port authorities come onboard to comply with reception formalities. Pilot station is located about 2.7 miles NE direction from Punta Aguja, depth at boarding area between 22/26 meters. Five light buoys have been installed within entrance channel so as to help vessels when approaching to the port.
Berth description:
The terminal Jetty is designed for taker ships up to 250,000 tns. Vessels always moored portside to, except under contrary orders given port administration. The crude is loaded by gravity from shore tanks at rate depending of ship`s requirement and quality of product. For this purpose the loading platform is fitted with four loading hydraulic arms with capacity of abt 25.000 barrels per hour (each loading arm). They can be operated in individual form or combined, without causing any interfere in connection with inactive arms.
The loading platform also equipped with a control building, four berthing defenses and four dolphins connected between each other by metallic footbridges, which extend the berthing installation to a length of 490 meters. Each defense is well equipped with mooring hooks and electric capstans so as to assist good securing of mooring lines.
Concentrates are loaded by means of conveyor belt which comes from the depot situated at alto Matarani (50 mtrs. above sea level) and abt 800 mtrs away from the main gate. The conveyor end can be shifted in a range of about 80 to 90 mtrs, for which bigger vessels have to be shifted during loading in order to reach extreme holds.
