Port Location and Influence Area:
Callao is by large the main Peruvian port. Most of the productive forces located in the nearby industrial districts have in "Terminal Portuario del Callao" (TPC) under ENAPU administration its main gate to foreign markets across the oceans. A large share of Peru's foreign trade is shipped and received through the TPC, being an average of up to 75 pct of the total import and export goods handled at its facilities.
The port of Callao is located about 20 kilometers from Lima (Peruvian Capital) where some 8´000,000 inhabitants between Great Lima an Callao are the main influence area. However, Callao's influence extends far more to the Northern and Southern provinces of Ica and Ancash, as liner service is mostly available from Callao only and many cargoes have to be trucked from as far as 600 Kms. away where the big plantations, mines and export oriented industries are located. The port is well linked with the inland by both paved roads and railroad system.
Distances From Callao:
1342 nautical miles to the South of Balboa.
526 nautical miles to the South of Talara.
258 nautical miles to the South of Salaverry.
136 nautical miles to the South of Puerto Punta Lobitos (Huarmey).
127 nautical miles to the North of Pisco.
447 nautical miles to the North of Matarani.
500 nautical miles to the North of Ilo.
1315 nautical miles to the North of Valparaiso.
Port Description:
The port of Callao is protected by two artificial breakwaters about 2,100 mtrs the Northern one and about 1,000 mtrs the Southern breakwater. The opening between breakwaters is about 150 meters. However, about 70 meters only of clear passage available. Pilot boards vessels about one mile off the port entrance. The port has a good approach and navigation aids, there is a "traffic separation scheme" which is well marked on navigation charts. The San Lorenzo lighthouse is an excellent landmark. The access channel is well marked by sea buoys and light on each breakwater.
Once breakwaters are cleared, pilots can turn vessels bow to the sea or bow to shore, depending on cargo and berth assigned. The available draft at turning basin varies from 36 to 37 feet SWD.
The port has no records of closing due to bad weather. However, it is common to have the port closed due to dense fog during morning time in specially on January, February and March.
Port Restrictions: (see official restrictions)
Restrictions are official. However, some arrangements can be done with port and pilots to slightly exceed the restrictions under favorable conditions.
Anchorage:
Callao anchorage allows all type of vessels. On entering a 20 miles circle off San Lorenzo lighthouse, vessels should contact with the port control center (TRAMAR CALLAO) in the frequency of channel 16/13 vhf, requesting the exact anchoring position and further instructions.

Port Infrastructure:
The "Terminal Portuario Callao" TPC is owned and operated by "Empresa Nacional de Puertos" ENAPU S.A. (state company). There are 21 berths with following details.

Pier 1 A-B for grains, general and liquid cargoes.
Pier 2 A-B for grains, general and bagged, containers cargoes.
Pier 3 A-B for general cargo. (Mostly container vessels).
Pier 4 A-B berth B is used for lubricating and vegetable oils. Additionally, there are pipe-lines to the pier head (4-C) where supply barges are loaded with IFO/MGO/MDO.

Pier 5 berth A is the cleanest berth, used for passengers and official visits as has a passenger building and typical handicrafts are shown and sold there. Pier 5-B is mostly used for containers and steels, general cargo, etc. The remaining berths 5 C-D-E are employed for loading of mineral concentrates with mobile conveyor belts which mostly owned by the shippers.

Pier 7 this pier is employed for discharge of crude oil, clean products, propane gas, chemicals and water. Two vessels can be worked simultaneously. Discharge pressure is 100 lbs. but with gas it can reach 250 lbs. Pier 9 has 3 berths for merchant/fishing ships, the fourth is now used by trawlers and tugs. There are plans to definitely demolish this pier for future expansion plans.
Pier 10 A-B mostly small fishing vessels and navy patrol ships are at this berth.

Pier 11 (grain) this place is mostly known as "silos berth" as it has three pneumatic towers on rails for discharging bulk grain into the silos on the wharf, capacity 21,000 tons, or directly to trucks.
Grain discharge operations are mostly performed at general cargo berths, using ship's own gear and receivers/stevedores clamshells (between 8 and 10 cbm each) achieving better discharge rates than with the port towers.
There is not common for vessels to wait more than one day at anchor for grains discharge. However, according to regulations, all vessels with grain cargoes are to be inspected at roads by SENASA. Said inspections are carried out with daylight only (0800/1400 hrs). Berths for grain vessels are granted once SENASA inspection passed only.
Pilotage:
Pilotage is compulsory for all ocean going vessels. Vessels exceeding 200 mtrs LOA should employ two pilots as per regulations.
Tugs:
The use of two tugs is compulsory for entering, sailing and moving in the port. Additional tugs are sometimes requested by Pilots and/or Port Operations Office, depending on nature of vessel and/or cargo and berth assigned.
Warehouse / Storaged Capacity:
There are 3 sheds of 9,060 m2, capacity of 30,000 mt used either for import goods (steels, pipes, machinery, cotton, etc.) or some other exports such as fishmeal (bags/ bulk). The are also 7 open storage zones with details / capacity as follows:
