Chimbote
is the main Peruvian port for fishmeal and fish oil exports. Adittionally,
is the base port for the main Peruvian steel mill (SiderPeru),
having its own berth for iron ore and coke imports as well as
finished steels exports.

Its
influence area comprises the Peruvian central region, with
a total
population of about 800,000 inhabitants.

Description: |
|
Chimbote
is a natural harbor on Ferrol Bay, the port itself is well
protected
on the SW by Blanca island. There are two entrance channels,
the first being better known as the Northern Entrance (Paso
del Norte)
located between Roca Blanca and Punta Chimbote approximately
190 meters wide and about 21 meters water depth, it is the
most frequently
used access. The second entrance is named Middle Entrance (Paso
del Medio), which lies between the Blanca islands and Ferrol
del
Norte, it has approximately 1.4 miles wide on 19/20 meters meter
water depth.

All
arriving vessels must proceed first to Chimbote Bay through the
"Middle entrance" channel and drop anchor about 1 mile
SW from Blanca island (at average depths of 11 to 13 mtrs.) waiting
for reception formalities. The anchorage are is well shelterd.

Swell
and surge affect the port some 2 or 3 times per month specially
between May and September. For this reason, the port is closed
an average of 52/53 days per year, being each port closing an
average
of 2 to 3 days. |

Pier
No. 1 (A/B) is 165 mtrs. long by , 16 mtrs. Wide. Vessels
up to 170 mtrs LOA can berth at either side of pier. Ships
usually
berth "bow to shore". For all sailing vessels with
a maximum draft of 30`06" (swd), unberthing manouvers
are restricted to high tide periods. |

Pier
No. 2 it is a small berth used for fishing vessels, lighters,
tugs, and other port vessels. When pier 1 A/B is congested, loading
operations can be performed at anchorage by mean of barges. Lighters
or barges are loaded with fishmeal at pier nr 2 (where available
draft is only 4 to 5 mtrs) in order to be towed alongside the
anchoerd vessels. This system allows two vessels loading simultaneously
at anchorage. |

Pier
No. 3 belongs to Siderperu. It is 250 mtrs. Long and 30
mtrs. Wide. Official restrictions are : 230 mtrs LOA and 29´00"
SWD. However, vessels can be moored with up to 31' 06" and
even 32' 00" at high tide periods and previously coordinated
with pilots.

Iron
ore and coke cargoe are discharged by receivers two shore cranes
of 17 tons SWL each, which run over rails along the berth. These
shore cranes feed the conveyor 1500 mtrs. Long conveyor belt which
transport the product to the stock piles on shore. The berth can
be used for loading fishmeal, however vessels carrying cargo for
Sider Peru have priority over those vessels.

Compulsory.
Pilots usually board at anchorage located inside the entrance
bay. All vessels exceeding 7 meters draft must proceed alongside
trough the "Northern Entrance".
