Port Location and Influence Area:
The port of Ilo is located some 508 nautical miles to the South of Callao, in a reasonably sheltered bay of good harbour and easy access. The area has two of the largest copper mines in the country, (Cuajone and Toquepala) both operated by Southern Peru Limited. Ilo is the southern outlet for mineral exports and also handles large volumes of incoming cargoes. The Pan-American highway linked by other major roads connects the port of Ilo with other cities such as Arequipa, Camana, Moquegua and Tacna. Besides, the bi-national cooperation between Peru and Bolivia will increase its influence area to Bolivian and even Brazilian regions in the near future.
Port Description:
The port of Ilo is situated abt 4.3 miles to the north of Punta Coles, in a clean bay and is divided in 2 sections, being the southern one the Southern Peru Limited (SPL) own "finger" pier for their own exports and imports. To the North is the "fiscal" pier which belongs to Empresa Nacional de Puertos (ENAPU). The port has a rocky and clean seabed.
There is good shelter from Southern seas for which no heavy sea conditions are experienced, some moderate swell and surge can be expected at berth though. However, between May and September, some port closings are experienced when swell conditions may cause ships breaking lines.
