Port Location and Influence Area:
The port of Paita is located some 504 nautical miles to the North of Callao. The port is linked to the city of Piura through a paved highway (58 kms). Its influence area comprises the Grau Region (depatments of Piura and Tumbes) as well as the Northeast region of Marañon (Lambayeque and Amazonas).
The main goods being exported through the port are canned and frozen fish, fishmeal and fishoil, fruits and shrimps (containerized), phosphate rock and cotton. The imports are general cargo (including containers and vehicles) fertilizers ,grains and vegetable oil in bulk.
Port Description:
The port is a "finger pier" type, naturally sheltered with no swell and/or surge problems, as the cliffs surrounding the bay well protect the port area. The minimum water depth in the maneuvering area is 32 feet and the seabed consists of mud and clay which is dredged every 3 years. When draft exceeds 32' swd, then maneuvers are restricted to high tides only.
Currents in the bay are very weak and winds are either from the South or Southeast with an average speed of 9 to 12 knots, which help only to refresh the semi-tropical atmosphere, specially between May and July. The port has no records of closure on account of swell and or surge. Rain are experienced when "El Niño" affects the Peruvian coast only.
Port Infrastructure:
The "finger pier" (365 mtrs. long by 36 mtrs. Wide) can accommodate up to four vessels at a time. However, the first 165 mtrs. berths named 1-A and 1-B only suitable for deep draft vessels. On the remaining 200 mtrs. nearer the shore, berths 2-C and 2-D for smaller vessels.

Pier 1-A used for container vessels. General cargo vessels can also operate at this berth. However, container ships have priority over any other vessel.
Pier 1-B multipurpose berth, general/ bulk cargo and containers can be discharged at this wharf. Discharging operations of grains always done by means of ships cranes and shore clamshells.
Pier 1-C multipurpose berth, only for small vessels due to draft restrictions.
Pier 1-D used to discharge of vegetable oil by means of pipe-line connection. The oil is pumped directly into two tanks on shore. capacities 1,000 and 800 MT.
